On a hilltop site in Pickens County, an Upstate couple who had spent their working years in Georgia found the perfect location for their retirement home. The site offered dramatic views in almost every direction, with a breathtaking view to the north.  The only problem was the existing house on the site offered little to be desired, so they embarked on a three-year odyssey with architect, Joel Van Dyke, AIA, to transform the plain existing 1980’s ranch home into a spectacular family compound, taking full advantage of all that the location had to offer.

The low existing porch was removed and a new porch roof was added that gives greater emphasis to the front entrance.  The additional height in the front porch opens up the view from the dining room which opens onto the porch through new french doors. Along with the new cupola, the new porch gives the house greater presence on the hilltop. The original red brick was painted a warm color to blend with new stone and cedar shingle siding. Shuttered details cover the original octagonal windows in the gables.

The main house and new three-car garage with guest house above are connected by a ramped breezeway. The entrance to the breezeway from the parking court frames a view of the mountains beyond (left).

The two-bedroom, two-bath guest house (below) includes a small kitchen and a sitting room with a private covered deck on the view side of the building.

The lodge-like sunroom provides plenty of gathering space for extended family to gather and enjoy the views to the mountains.
